Kagaribi 13 was a Super Smash Bros. Ultimate superpremier held in Tokorozawa, Saitama from May 4th-5th, 2025. It was the last big event of Japan's 2025 Golden Week. With 44 of the LumiRank 2024.2's top 50 and over 2,500 entrants, it is considered one of the most difficult tournaments in Smash history.
Tournament summary
Registration and attendance
Unique among Japanese tournaments is Kagaribi 13's initial priority registration being reserved for international players only. As such, Kagaribi 13 notably surpassed A tier on the LumiRank 2025 with less than 100 players and without any Japanese players.[1] Following priority registration opening for Japanese players a week later, the event quickly skyrocketed into the P tier. Among those registered were many players who were traveling to Japan for the first time in their career for Golden Week; those players include Light, Tweek, Syrup, SHADIC, Kola, and Onin from the United States, Sonix from the Dominican Republic, WaKa from Mexico, crêpe salée from France, Sisqui from Spain, Supahsemmie from the Netherlands, and Tarik from Germany. Due to the event's prestige, members of the Discord group StatsCord set up several GoFundMe fundraisers to fly out players from around the world, with every GoFundMe eventually becoming fully funded,[2] while several other players registered in order to save a spot in case they wanted to attend. Altogether, 47 out of the 50 players on the LumiRank 2024.2 initially registered for the event, tying its top 50 attendance with the Smash 4 event 2GGC: Civil War; only Marss (#23), BeastModePaul (#30) and AlanDiss (#46) did not register. Though several players eventually dropped out of the event, most notably Hurt, who was banned for two months starting in April 1st for using a delay mod, 44 top 50 players still attended the event, which was 7 more players than the previous record-holder, EVO 2019. The large number of top-level players in attendance, alongside a slew of talent from around the world, caused Kagaribi 13 to become the most stacked Ultimate tournament of all time, and led to the creation of a new "superpremier" tier for LumiRank, the event notably skipping over the P+ tier that was also created.[3]
Day 1 (Phase 1 and 2)
Many large upsets took place during these phases, leading to early Losers brackets or the elimination of several high seeds. In Phase 1, the first ranked player to fall was Lax, the #106 seed and 147th on the LumiRank 2024.2, who lost to #919 seed Yusura 1-2 (upset factor 6) and #2,199 seed Adizero 1-2 (upset factor 9) to place 1,025th. The first top 100 player to fall was Skeleton, the #79 seed and 60th on the LumiRank 2024.2, who lost to #946 seed Nayan 1-2 (upset factor 7) and #1,458 seed Soyu 1-2 (upset factor 8) to place 769th. Finally, several additional upsets took place in winners, including two upsets with a factor of 10 — #1,996 seed Nyanchan defeating #53 seed Ryuoh 0-2 and #1,587 seed Oni-san defeating #51 seed Lv.1 1-2. Both players were able to make it out of Phase 1.
Even more major upsets took place in Phase 2, especially on players seeded to make top 64. These upsets include: #149 seed Miru defeating #21 seed Lima 2-3 (upset factor 6), #794 seed Sauzando defeating #26 seed KEN 2-0 (upset factor 10), #293 seed Mokumoku defeating #37 seed Dabuz 1-2 (upset factor 6), #218 seed Malk defeating #39 seed Sisqui 0-2 (upset factor 5), and #213 seed mion defeating #44 seed Gorioka 1-1 (upset factor 4). Likewise, many of these top 64 seeds were eliminated in this phase, including #17 seed Kola, who lost to #240 seed Ball 1-2 (upset factor 7) and #1,361 seed Mane 0-2 (upset factor 12) to place 257th; #45 seed Supahsemmie, who lost to #301 seed Kurumis 1-2 (upset factor 6) and #141 seed Whisky 1-2 (upset factor 4) to place 257th; #47 seed Susu, who lost to #210 seed Kuroponzu 1-2 (upset factor 5, though Kuroponzu was considered underseeded by several players) and #175 seed loaf 2-3 (upset factor 4) to place 193rd; #55 seed alice, who lost to #311 seed Torogu 1-2 (upset factor 5) and #439 seed Inaba Koshi Hoshiyomi 2-3 (upset factor 6) to place 193rd; and #62 seed omega, who lost to #195 seed Niyae 1-2 (upset factor 4) and #382 seed Raito 1-2 (upset factor 5) to place 257th.
Conversely, the most notable run during these early phases was from #2,404 seed Frontier, the best player on Smashmate at that moment who many players also considered underseeded. Despite this event being his first major, let alone supermajor, he made many large upsets during the first two phases, starting with #358 seed Marcos 0-2 (upset factor 6) before eventually defeating #155 seed Jagaimo 1-2 (upset factor 8) to make it out of Phase 1 on the Winner's side. Though he then fell to #102 seed Hero's Donkey Kong, Frontier was able to enter Top 192 on the Losers side by making the biggest upset of the early phases: defeating SHADIC 2-3 at 193rd for an upset factor of 13 (SHADIC having been sent to losers by #230 seed CLAW 0-2 for an upset factor of 6).
Final day
Despite the upsets not exceeding the largest factor of the previous phase, several notable NA players fell rather early. In Phase 3, #8 seed Light lost to #185 seed Lunamado 2-3 (upset factor 9), #11 seed MkLeo lost to #54 seed Neo 1-3 (upset factor 5), #15 seed Onin lost to #50 seed Reno 0-3 (upset factor 4), and #25 seed Maister lost to #40 seed Taikei 0-3. As a result, Light and Maister fought each other at the start of top 64 losers, with Light ultimately coming on top and eliminating Maister 3-2 at 49th. However, Light then lost to #19 seed Snow 2-3 (upset factor 3) to place 33rd, his worst ever performance at an offline major.
In Phase 4, the biggest upset in winners was on the #1 seed Sparg0, who lost to #32 seed Riddles 2-3 (upset factor 9); he ultimately fought MkLeo in losers, who swiftly 3-0'd him using Aegis (upset factor 6), eliminating him at 33rd, his worst major performance since the previous Kagaribi event where he also placed 33rd, as well as the only Japanese event where Sparg0 exclusively lost to NA players. Other notable upsets in top 64 winners include #3 seed Miya losing to #13 seed Glutonny 0-3 (upset factor 4), #7 seed Syrup losing to #90 seed Rimu 0-3 (upset factor 7), #9 seed Asimo losing to #24 seed Wrath 0-3, and #10 seed Sonix losing to #23 seed Tea 1-3. Glutonny's upset on Miya notably marked the third time in a row Miya had lost to Glutonny that season. In addition, after upsetting Syrup, Rimu defeated Tea 3-1 (upset factor 4). On the losers side, Dabuz was eliminated at 49th after losing to #48 seed Shion 2-3, his worst performance at an Ultimate major. After losing to Glutonny in winners, #20 seed Zackray was eliminated by #59 seed MKBigBoss 1-3 (upset factor 3) to place 33rd. Not only was this the second major in a row where Zackray placed 33rd, but it was also the second time in a row where he was eliminated by a character he mained, as he lost to Ouch!?'s Wolf at LVL UP EXPO 2025 the previous week, and as such marks the end of Zackray's streak of top 8 finishes at Kagaribi events. In losers round 3, MkLeo was eliminated by Lv.1 0-3 (upset factor 5) to place 25th, also marking his worst major performance since Kagaribi 12. On the other hand, Lv.1's 11-set losers run ended after losing to yet another Bayonetta player in TamaPDaifuku 2-3 to place 17th. Finally, #5 seed Zomba lost to #12 seed Raru 1-3 in winners before being eliminated by #36 seed MuteAce 1-3 (upset factor 6) to place 17th, his worst placement this season.
